![]() Toned milk is a nutritious option and offers many of the same benefits associated with cow’s milk. If you don’t have these dietary restrictions, a good rule of thumb is to practice moderation and be sure to maintain an otherwise balanced diet that emphasizes a variety of healthy, whole foods. Though most research shows benefits, limited evidence suggests that excessive dairy intake may increase the risk of certain illnesses, including acne and prostate cancer, in some people ( 8, 9).Īdditionally, if you’re lactose intolerant or have a milk protein allergy, you should avoid toned milk. In fact, routinely consuming dairy products like toned milk is associated with various potential health benefits, including improved bone mineral density and a reduced risk of chronic conditions, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes ( 7). In moderation, it’s a very healthy choice for most people. With this product, DiBruno said, "we can bring back to the dairyman the people who don't use milk." And he added, "We don't want to make any radical claims, but if we could get 1 to 2 percent back to drinking milk that would be quite a bit."īonnie Liebman, the director of nutrition at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group, said the product "may not be the magic bullet that they make it out to be, but it probably won't hurt.Toned milk is a great source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. He said a gallon of milk made with Replace would cost 20 percent to 22 percent more than regular milk. ![]() DiBruno said the artificial sweetener was used because it reduces the caloric content and would be good for dieters and diabetics. The milk will also be available with chocolate flavor and sweet-ened with aspartame, whose brand name is Nutrasweet. The 37 studies to which the company makes reference have been conducted on a variety of oat products, including oatmeal and oat bran. Because of the study's design, it is not possible to determine how much of the effect was due to the Oatrim and how much was due to a reduction in fat intake. The company says the Food and Drug Administration has concluded that "there is significant scientific agreement to support claims regarding the usefulness of beta-glucan in reducing serum cholesterol levels" based on "37 human studies on the benefits of Oatrim."īut only one study has been done on Oatrim, and while the study indicates that Oatrim can lower cholesterol levels, the evidence is not conclusive. One of those fibers, beta-glucan, has shown cholesterol-lowering effects.īut the marketers of Replace, who will sell their product to dairies that will mix it with super-skimmed milk, go beyond the literature from studies in making assertions for their product. ![]() Oatrim, which was developed by the Agriculture Depart-ment, is hydrolyzed oat flour and is derived from a process that frees soluble dietary fibers from oat bran. ![]() The new ingredient, Replace, contains thickeners and stabilizers as well as Oatrim to lower cholesterol. The taste difference would disappear if the milk were poured over cereal or into coffee. But it contains only 0.05 grams of fat in each 8-ounce serving compared with 0.5 grams for skim milk and almost 5 grams for 2 percent milk. The milk is palatable enough, although it does not taste exactly like 2 percent milk. Its inventors say they believe that the new product will appeal to people who dislike skim milk because of its bluish color and watery taste but feel they should drink it, to reduce fat consumption. The development of the fortified milk was announced at a news conference here Thursday by Golden Jersey Products, a research and development company in Vero Beach, Fla. The milk, made with nonfat milk and a mixture that contains oat flour, is expected to be available by the fall in many parts of the country. It seems like a publicist's dream: skim milk that looks like whole milk, tastes like 2 percent milk and may lower cholesterol levels in many people.
